Cold Shower

This morning, at the crack of dawn, I dragged my son to the bus stop.  It was his first day back after summer break.  None of us were too pleased to be standing there in the dark. (Yes, the bus comes before the sun rises, which in my opinion, is absolutely ridiculous!)

We stood, patiently waiting.  But then something happened.  We heard a swish sound, and a nano second later, the sprinkler system at the entrance of our neighborhood came on, dousing us with cold water.

"What the heck!" I said, quickly dodging the sprinkler before I got even wetter.

Bubba, who wasn't nearly as wet as me, laughed.  "It's your morning shower, Mama!  Now you can start your day, clean and shiny!"

Yay.

  3. When I was in 5th grade, the bus came before dawn also. I had to be at the bus stop around 6:30. Some days it never showed up. I think 6th grade was similar to that also, but the busses were so crowded we were sitting in the aisles and in each other's laps. In 7th grade, we didn't even have a bus to the school. We would have to take the public bus and pay every morning. All different schools. I've decided if I have kids then I'll probably just drive them.

    1. I drove my kids most of the time. Having that extra 15 minutes in the morning because we didn't need to get out to the bus stop made our lives much more pleasant.

    2. I drive my daughter, which helps, but my son's school starts at 7:15. I don't think driving would help that issue much, plus the principal complains about kids not taking the bus.

  8. LOL Your son is so cute! But getting sprayed by a sprinkler is not fun unless your a kid and your running around your backyard in a bathing suit.

    1. He just got a few sprinkles. I got drenched because I was standing right next to them. Note to self: Stand somewhere else!

  10. What happened to going back to school after Labor Day? It's barely mid-August.

    1. It's ridiculous! Georgia goes back a full two weeks before Ohio, and Ohio gets out earlier. There was a newspaper article regarding that, a few weeks ago. The consensus is that teachers want to get the kids back in school so they don't suffer too much brain drain, and so they can start preparing for the next CRCT state testing.

    2. I was on the Citizens Advisory Committee at The Hurricane's elementary and middle schools. Teachers said that quite a few students didn't retain what they had learned while they were out of school. Middle Child's children have year-round school, with appropriate breaks. I don't know if that's the answer to the problem. When The Hurricane went to prep school the opening convocation was usually on Labor Day and classes started the next day. The students had summer reading assignments. One book was to be read by all students, and at the beginning of the school year, that was the first book they studied in English class. Sometimes the author came to speak. Prep school, at least The Hurricane's, was a completely different world from public school and even most private schools.

  12. Kids are having a tough time these days, getting up before dawn to travel. It is ridiculous. They too have high stress levels.

  13. LOL. Schools here don't start until next week, and I don't even know if they're going to have a bus route into our new neighborhood--since they've been cutting back. Scary things...
